The Exophonia transforms the ICNALE* corpus, thousands of L2 English essays written by students across 19 Asian regions, all arguing the same prompt, into a living understory of exophony, the act of speaking and writing in a non-native tongue. The Exophonia reclaims the otherness of the non-native voice, turning it into a cross-cultural ecology at once rooted and restless, argument and song.
The Exophonia is companion piece to the Many Voices: Japanese Languages in Canada exhibit, on view in the Moriyama Nikkei Heritage Centre.
The ICNALE (International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English) is an international learner corpus developed by Dr. Shin Ishikawa, Kobe University, Japan.
